Rescuers are battling against the clock to find survivors of a devastating earthquake in southeast Turkey. On Tuesday, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey, just hours after three devastating earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, killing over 4,000 people. Thousands more have been injured, and the search for survivors continues. Many countries are sending supplies and relief teams, including India.
The World Health Organization has warned that the death toll could skyrocket as rescuers find more victims.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams search through the rubble. The first quake’s epicentre was near Nurdagi in Gaziantep province, near the Syrian border. The other two quakes occurred in the nearby province of Kahramanmaraş. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared seven days of national mourning, during which Turkish flags will be flown at half-staff across the country and at diplomatic missions around the world.
Early this morning, NDRF Search and Rescue Teams, specially trained dog squads, medical supplies, drilling machines, and other equipment from India left for Turkey. This came just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the earthquake-ravaged country.
