Srichand Parmanand Hinduja, the eldest of the four Hinduja brothers and chairman of the Hinduja Group passed away in London on Wednesday.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Hinduja family expressed their grief and announced the demise of their family patriarch and Hinduja Group chairman, Mr S P Hinduja. He had been unwell for some time and passed away at the age of 87. As a British national, his death occurred in London.
Noting that the Hinduja family patriarch and his brothers, Gopichand and Prakash, were previously accused of receiving approximately SEK 81 million in illegal commissions linked to helping Swedish gunmaker AB Bofors secure a contract with the Indian government. However, the brothers were eventually exonerated by the court.
The Bofors scandal remains a significant political controversy in India, having sparked extensive investigations and legal proceedings. The scandal revolved around allegations of illicit commissions being paid to secure a contract for the supply of guns to the Indian Army. This case serves as a reminder of the lasting impact that corruption scandals can have on individuals and their business interests, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in corporate affairs.
