Pop star Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerald Pique have ended their 11-year relationship. The couple met in 2011 during the shoot of Waka Waka (This time for Africa), the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The 45-year-old “Hips Don’t Lie” singer and 35-year-old FC Barcelona defender have two sons together: Milan, born in 2013, and Sasha, born in 2015. They’ve maintained a residence in Spain.
“We regret to confirm that we are separating,” the couple said in a joint statement Saturday. “We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect.”
The news comes over a week after she filed a lawsuit for tax fraud. Spanish prosecutors accused her of defrauding the tax office of Spain of 14.5 million Euros (US$ 15.5 million) of income earned between 2012 and 2014. Her defence lawyer states that she moved to Spain fully only in 2015 and insists that her “conduct on tax matters has always been impeccable in all the countries she had to pay taxes.”
