Somabhai Patel Might Return To Congress Ahead Of Gujarat Polls

| Updated: August 25, 2022 13:25

According to the speculations, Somabhai Gandalal Koli Patel, who resigned from Congress in 2020, might make a return to the party. His recent meeting with the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, sparked the rumours.

However, some sources say that Ashok Gehlot did not meet him. So he had to meet with AICC (All India Congress Committee) Secretary Ram Kishan Ojha.

Furthermore, Somabhai Patel has denied any rumours. He said, “I did not reach out to meet anyone. If I want to meet Ashok Gehlot, I will go to Rajasthan.” However, the politician also mentioned that he would contest in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Somabhai Patel’s political career kickstarted in 1989 when he became the Member of Parliament from Surendranagar under Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He won the elections again in 1991 from the same constituency. After that, he saw a series of victories from 2004 to 2009.

However, in 2009, Congress gave a ticket to Somabhai Patel and won the elections. Even though he was an MP, Congress fielded him from Limbdi in 2012. Then, he became an MLA after defeating Kiritsinh Rana. Congress made Somabhai Patel resign from the Legislative Assembly as he was an MP.

In 2014, he contested again in the elections under Congress. But this time, Patel lost to Devji Fatepara. He also lost the 2019 elections, after which he resigned from Congress in 2020.
