Sri Lanka Imports 2 Million Eggs From India To Maintain Food Security

| Updated: March 23, 2023 18:13

Sri Lanka’s Trade Minister Nalin Fernando stated the island nation has imported two million eggs from India to maintain food security.

Fernando informed the parliament that the State Trading General Corporation’s shipment had arrived and that the stocks will be available on the market in three days.

In order to assure food security, a cabinet committee decided to import eggs, according to Fernando.

The Animal Production and Health Department refused to permit the import of eggs from Pakistan or India in January when the market shortages were first noted, as both nations had recorded bird-flu outbreaks in the previous six months.

According to Himali Kotelawala, Director General of the Health Department, the country of origin of the eggs must have been free of bird flu for at least six months.

The Animal Health Disease Act in Sri Lanka prohibits the import of eggs from countries that have recently had major bird flu outbreaks. She previously told reporters that the Import and Export Controller General was not permitted to import eggs from India.

The trade ministry announced that after the required quality inspections, only the bakery industry will be permitted to use eggs of Indian origin.

According to the local poultry farmers’ association, imports must originate from nations like Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and the United States of America that have no bird flu cases.
