‘Couple Swapping Is Spreading’: Surat Woman Claims Husband Pressured Her, Social Media Fueling Trend

| Updated: June 20, 2026 20:12

A woman from Surat has come forward with serious allegations against her husband, claiming that he pressured her to participate in a couple-swapping network just three months after their marriage. The woman, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons and is referred to here as Seema (name changed), says she refused to take part and later faced harassment and physical abuse.

The allegations have sparked widespread discussion on social media after a video of Seema describing her experience went viral. She has also appealed to Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi to take action and address what she describes as a growing social problem.

How the Network Operates

According to Seema, the process begins with creating fake Facebook profiles under different names. Couples upload selected photographs and use these accounts to connect with other couples interested in similar activities.

She claims that communication starts with casual conversations through Facebook and video calls. Interested couples then arrange tea or coffee meetings to get acquainted. After meeting in person, they may plan outings together and eventually book hotel rooms, where partner-swapping activities allegedly take place.

Seema stated that because participants arrive as married couples, booking hotel rooms often does not raise suspicion.

From Small Groups to Large Networks

Seema alleges that what initially started with only four or five couples gradually expanded into a much larger network. According to her, the number of participating couples has now crossed 400.

She further claimed that participants include both wealthy and middle-class individuals. In some cases, middle-class couples are allegedly offered up to ₹20,000 for a single night of participation. While some individuals reportedly participate for money, others allegedly join for enjoyment or social interaction.

According to her estimate, the number of couples involved in such activities in Surat could be much higher.

Pressure Within Marriage

Seema said she married in Surat in 2022 and was shocked when her husband allegedly introduced the idea of couple swapping only a few months into their marriage.

She claims that her husband, along with his elder brother and sister-in-law, supported the practice and attempted to convince her to participate. According to Seema, she firmly refused.

“I was scared after hearing about it. My husband wanted me to become involved in couple swapping, but I resisted,” she said.

She also claims to possess chat records and other evidence that she intends to present during legal proceedings.

Allegations of Abuse and Blackmail

Seema alleges that while some women may agree voluntarily, others are pressured into participation. She claims that some husbands resort to emotional pressure, blackmail, or physical violence when their wives refuse.

According to her, she was beaten after refusing to participate. She has since filed a case against her husband, and legal proceedings are currently ongoing in both police and family courts.

Appeal to Deputy Chief Minister

In her viral social media video, Seema appealed directly to Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, asking for an opportunity to present her concerns.

She stated that many women may be trapped in similar situations but remain silent due to fear, social pressure, or lack of support. She described the issue as a social evil that is affecting families and marriages.

What Is Couple Swapping?

Couple swapping, also known as partner swapping, refers to a consensual arrangement in which married or committed couples exchange partners for sexual activities.

Such practices are often associated with private social groups or “swinging” communities. Participants generally connect through online platforms, social networks, or private gatherings.

Supporters of the practice argue that it is based on mutual consent between adults. Critics, however, point to concerns involving emotional harm, coercion, exploitation, and the breakdown of trust within relationships.

Legal Position in India

India does not have a specific law that directly addresses consensual couple swapping between adults. However, legal issues can arise if any participant is forced, threatened, blackmailed, assaulted, or coerced into participating.

In cases involving domestic violence, physical abuse, sexual assault, intimidation, or non-consensual acts, criminal laws may apply.

A notable case was heard by the Delhi High Court, where a husband’s bail plea was rejected after allegations that he pressured his wife into partner swapping and subjected her to sexual harassment through his friends. The court expressed concern that the accused could intimidate the victim if released.

Experts Warn About Consent and Coercion

Relationship experts and psychologists note that while some adults may voluntarily participate in unconventional relationship arrangements, genuine consent remains the most important factor.

Experts caution that consent obtained through pressure, fear, manipulation, blackmail, or violence cannot be considered valid. They emphasize that individuals should never be forced into any activity against their wishes.

A Growing Social Debate

The allegations made by Seema have triggered fresh debate about changing relationship dynamics, online communities, and the risks of coercion within marriages.

While authorities have not publicly confirmed the scale of the activities described by Seema, her claims have drawn significant attention and raised questions about online networks, marital consent, and the protection of women from abuse.

As her legal case continues, the matter is likely to remain under public scrutiny, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations and stronger awareness about consent and domestic abuse.
