Tripura Elections: BJP, Cong Receive Notices For Seeking Votes Online

| Updated: February 16, 2023 18:53

The BJP’s national general secretary Dilip Saikia and the state parties of the Congress and the BJP received notices from the Chief Election Officer of Tripura today for soliciting votes on Twitter while voting was taking place in the northeastern state.

The tweets, which were sent during the 48-hour “silent period,” which started on Tuesday evening, according to the Election Commission, are illegal under election law. Around seven in the morning on Thursday, voting for the state’s 60-member Assembly began.

They now have the chance to “take corrective measures as soon as possible.” Also, they have been instructed to defend their stance by Friday at 5 pm.

In its notice to Saikia, the Tripura CEO said, ” … an appeal for a vote in favour of BJP has been tweeted from your handle at 0950 hours on 16.02.2023. The tweet is in form of a photo containing following message: Unnato Tripura Sreshtho Tripura Vote for BJP.”

According to the statement, the tweet violates section 126 (l)(b) of the Representation of the People Act of 1951, which forbids the public from viewing any election-related material on a cinematograph, television, or other similar apparatus in a polling location for 48 hours following the hour set for the polls to close for any election in that location.

A similar letter sent to the Tripura BJP stated that at 8 am on Thursday, the BJP handle tweeted a request for votes in their favour. “The tweet followed by a video clip is as under: For a safe and brighter future, vote for BJP,” it said.

The Tripura Congress was notified that on Thursday at 11.42 am, a tweet from the Tripura Congress account requested votes for the INC (Indian National Congress). “The tweet is as under: People of Tripura spontaneously casting vote for Congress. This time Congress will come,” the notice said.
