Turkey Quake: Footballer Christian Atsu Found Dead In The Rubble

| Updated: February 18, 2023 15:32

Christian Atsu, a former midfielder for Newcastle and a player of Ghana’s national team, was found dead in Turkey, according to his manager, who was quoted in local media on Saturday.

His body was discovered beneath the debris in the southern Turkish province of Hatay, according to his manager in Turkey, Murat Uzunmehmet, who spoke to a news agency on Saturday. “Atsu’s lifeless body was found under the rubble. Currently, more items are still being taken out. His phone was also found,” Uzunmehmet told reporters in Hatay, where the athlete’s body was found.

Apartment complexes with multiple floors and occupants were among Turkey’s thousands of destroyed buildings. Ghanaian footballer’s agent, Nana Sechere, tweeted, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well-wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning. My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.”

“I ask that whilst we make the necessary arrangements, that everyone would please respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time.” Christian Atsu joined the Turkish Super Lig club Hatayspor in September. The club is headquartered in the southern province of Hatay, close to the epicentre of Turkey’s significant earthquake.

Hours before the earthquake, Atsu was supposed to leave southern Turkey, but the management of Hatayspor revealed on Friday that the Ghanaian decided to stay with the team after scoring the match-winning goal in a Super Lig encounter on February 5.
