Who is Gurpatwant Singh Pannun?

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun is a Canadian and American citizen who is the legal advisor and spokesperson for Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a pro-Khalistan advocacy organization based in New York. Pannun is a controversial figure who has been accused of promoting violence and separatism.

Early Life and Education

Pannun was born in Khankot village on the outskirts of Amritsar, Punjab, India. He is believed to have graduated from Punjab University in the 1990s and moved to the United States. Pannun is an attorney at law in the US and has also been admitted to practice law in Canada.

Sikhs for Justice

Pannun founded Sikhs for Justice in 2007. The organization advocates for an independent Sikh state called Khalistan to be carved out of India. Khalistan was a proposed Sikh state that was briefly declared independent in 1984. However, the Indian government quickly suppressed the Khalistan movement and has since banned any organization that promotes it.

Pannun has been accused of promoting violence and separatism. In 2020, he was designated as an “individual terrorist” by the Indian government under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The Indian government has also requested an Interpol red notice for Pannun, but Interpol has rejected the request on two occasions.

Alleged Plot to Kill Pannun

In October 2023, US officials reportedly averted a plot to murder Pannun. The Financial Times reported that US federal prosecutors had filed a sealed indictment against at least one alleged perpetrator of the plot.

Pannun’s Threats Against Air India

In November 2023, Pannun made headlines after threatening a global blockade of Air India and insisting that the airline would not be allowed to operate. He also claimed that the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi would be renamed and remain shut on November 19. The National Investigation Agency registered a case against Pannun under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act over his threats.
