Wrestlers’ Stir Is Politically Motivated: Brij Bhushan Singh

| Updated: April 30, 2023 17:23

The president of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment by some of India’s top wrestlers, stated on Sunday that the politicians have been behind the athletes’ protest at Jantar Mantar from the beginning.

“This battle has gone beyond the athletes now as political parties have become part of it. From day one of the protest, I felt that this protest was politically motivated and not the voice of the athletes. They have been influenced by politicians,” he said.

The top wrestlers in the country, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, have been protesting since April 23, and calling for Singh to be charged with criminal sexual harassment and intimidation after allegedly harassing and intimidating seven wrestlers, including a minor.

Additionally, an FIR was filed against the BJP MP.

In recent days, politicians including Priyanka Gandhi and Bhupinder Singh Hooda of the Congress, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Jayant Chaudhary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Satya Pal Malik, and Delhi government ministers Atishi Singh and Suarbah Bhardwaj have all visited the protest site to show their support for the athletes.
