She is currently one of Bollywood’s most in-demand voices. Her songs in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar have been chart toppers. But a clip from Playback singer Jasmine Sandlas’s recent concert has stirred up a different kind of noise. A video from her Ahmedabad performance this month has gone viral, and not entirely for the right reasons.
Sandlas reportedly performed her song Shararat dressed in a lehenga choli. At one point, she poured water over herself before continuing the act. She also performed the song’s hook step on stage.
The controversy centres on what happened with the microphone. Several times during the performance, she lowered it while the song kept playing in the background. That gap between mic and music did not go unnoticed.
Critics were direct. One user asked what the “nonsense” was about. Another simply demanded to know why she was lip-syncing. A third noted, in Hindi, that performers at live concerts were not actually singing live anymore. Others called it a fake performance, pointing out that the song was playing behind her while she went through the motions.
The crowd at the venue, however, appeared to have a good time. And not everyone online was unhappy. One fan who claimed to be present at the show wrote that it had been a wonderful experience and thanked Sandlas for putting it together.
For those catching up, Sandlas made her Bollywood debut with Yaar Na Miley from Salman Khan’s Kick. The song became a major hit. She followed it with Illegal Weapon 2.0 in Street Dancer 3D, Taras Ni Aya Tujhko in Munjya, Nasha in Raid 2, Ashiqaan in The Bastards of Bollywood, and Poison Baby in Thamma, among others.
Her biggest moment to date has come with the Dhurandhar franchise. In the first film, she sang the title track and Shararat, the same song at the centre of this controversy. In Dhurandhar: The Revenge, she lent her voice to Jaiye Sanjana. The two-part franchise has collected over Rs 3,000 crore worldwide.
The irony is not lost. The song drawing the most criticism right now is also the one that made her a household name this year.
