The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is exploring the possibility of selling non-vegetarian waste collected from slaughterhouses and restaurants to companies for use in manufacturing pet food. The proposal was discussed during the standing committee meeting on Thursday, which addressed methods for disposing of the city’s diverse waste streams.
Giving the specifics, Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani said, “Currently, AMC processes and disposes of 1,000 metric tonnes of waste. There are plans to produce CNG from the green waste generated, with a plant of 70-80 metric tonnes capacity being set up. Some companies make biscuits for dogs from non-veg waste. We have suggested that non-veg waste generated in the city could be disposed of this way, if feasible.”
Responding to a query, Dani elaborated, “AMC can collect non-veg waste and give it to manufacturers. This is a concept under consideration.”
Speaking on the situation of the city’s homeless population, Dani said, “They are spotted sleeping outside in the cold. They have been instructed to be taken to night shelters.
Dani also highlighted other civic initiatives, stating, “10 new tenders are being issued to address waterlogging at various locations. A Rs 10 crore tender has been issued for the spot near Madhumalati Awas in Kathwada.”
He added that 16 new party plots and 10 community halls are under construction.
