Air India’s Ahmedabad-London flight A 171 with 242 people on board crashed soon after take off on Thursday afternoon near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Casualty details are awaited. Injured are being rushed to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital and emergency services have been pressed into service. Green corridor has been created to take the injured to the hospital.
Former Gujarat chief minister, Vijay Rupani, was also on the ill-fated flight. However, there is no official confirmation as yet. Out of the 242 people, 12 are believed to crew members. The passenger list included British and Canadian citizens.
Roads leading to the airport have been blocked for vehicular traffic. Ahmedabad Airport remains closed till further notice.
Air India confirmed the accident. The flight operator posted on social media that it is ascertaining the details.
A spokesperson of the SVPIA said that Flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, Gatwick, earlier today, was involved in a crash shortly after takeoff, outside the airport. He further said that as a result, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice.
Passengers have been advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport. The SVPIA has requested cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation.
