CM Sawant All Set to Get Old Historian Documents Back From Portugal to Goa

| Updated: June 8, 2022 17:13

CM of Goa Pramod Sawant believes that the old documents of Goa that are residing with Portugal could be put to good use by historians for research. He revealed that he had already asked Subhash Phal Desai, the Archives and Archeology minister to take the lead in getting the documents depicting Goan history back. Sawant is determined that his government will successfully be the one to revive Goan history, by bringing back the essential documents.

The CM of Goa proceeded to say that the ministry of Archives and Archeology should look into this matter, contact the Ministry of External Affairs and even visit Portugal if necessary in order to secure the documents related to Goa. The documents, according to him, can have a major role in future research of the state. All of this was said at the event organized by the state’s Directorate of Archives and Astrology (DAA).

Sawant also remarked that people often try to erase the history that contained evidence that Goa was also ruled by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. And, it was under him that the Hindu culture was preserved. The history only seems to showcase how Portuguese ruled Goa, not the Shivaji part of it. He then progressed to explain how the Chhatrapati Shivaji University was opened last year to encourage students to take up research in the arena of public administration.

He also shared that the government would take required steps for the beautification of the Betul Fortress, to promote tourism. The CM also appreciated the DAA for translating Portuguese documents related to the Betul Fortress, and presenting them in English.
