Global Leaders Concerned About US’s Use Of Military Planes For Deportation

| Updated: February 5, 2025 14:16

The use of military planes by the US to deport illegal immigrants has sparked concerns among global leaders, with Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro resisting the jets before being forced to back down and Mexcio’s President Claudia Sheinbaum promising to “defend our sovereignty.”

The general sentiment is that the US is engaged in covert military operations to suppress revolutionary movements and that its military assets on foreign soil are a lack of respect to the sovereignty of other nations.

The manner of deportation aligns with US President Donald Trump’s rhetoric who has been demonising illegal immigrants, calling them “aliens” and “criminals” who are “invading” the US.

News wires called it an act of symbolism. Trump himself has boasted about the historic use of military aircraft for deportations, claiming, “We’re respected again, after years of laughing at us like we’re stupid people.”

A US military plane, a C-17 aircraft, carrying 205 deported Indian nationals is en route to India.

The operation, wires reported, are extraordinarily costly. While the US typically uses commercial charter flights operated by US Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) for deportation, military aircraft like the imposing C-17s carry a significant price tag.

A recent report from an agency highlighted that a military deportation flight to Guatemala cost approximately $4,675 per deportee, more than five times the cost of a first-class ticket on a commercial flight. In comparison, ICE-chartered flights cost about $630 per person. Yet, the Trump administration continues to choose the more expensive military planes.

The New York Times reported that “…on Friday, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, posted images of migrants filing onto a hulking, slate-gray C-17 Air Force plane, while shackled together. The caption read, ‘President Trump is sending a strong and clear message to the entire world: if you illegally enter the United States of America, you will face severe consequences.’”

It also clarified that the Trump administration has not replaced non-military planes and so far represent a small fraction of the flights carrying out deportations under his administration. Approximately six such flights have delivered deportees to other countries as of the end of Trump’s second week in office, the daily reported citing a US military spokesman.
