Mumbra Police in Thane district, today, issued summons to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her insulting comments against Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim community. The police said that Sharma would need to come to the station and record her statement regarding the controversial remarks on June 22. This news comes two days after the BJP distanced itself from the comments made by Sharma and suspended her from the primary membership.
Nupur Sharma had made some derogatory remarks agianst the Prophet Muhammad in late May when she participated in a television debate. These comments caused quite a stir, in India as well as in abroad. An FIR has been filed against her booking her for her comments. The situation has gotten so bad that the Delhi Police has provided security to Sharma and her family as she has also recieved death threats.
As for the outrage in the rest of the world, BJP came under fire of the Arab World. When Qatar, Iran and Kuwait expressed their anger over the comments made by Sharma, BJP was quick to take action to soothe any ruffled feathers, and suspended her. Sharma too posted a public apology saying that her comments had been a result of her frustration over TV debates and she had not intended to hurt anybody’s sentiments.
However, it seems that these efforts was not enough when Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and the Maldives also joined in the criticism against BJP. Now, Oman, Bahrain, Jordan, Libya, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation are all standing against BJP and India over this matter.
