Nothing Will Stand in Our Way: Trump Begins Second Term with Bold Vision for the US

| Updated: January 21, 2025 12:41

“The golden age of America begins right now,” Donald Trump declared during his coronation as the US’s 47th president and second term at office. He administered the oath of office by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts at the Capitol in Washington on Monday.

He bellowed: “From this day forward our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer.

“During every single day of the Trump administration, I will very simply put America first.”

“From this day on, the United States of America will be a free, sovereign and independent nation. We will stand bravely. We will live proudly. We will dream boldly, and nothing will stand in our way,” he said.

With these stirring words, President Trump described how he planned to make his second term in office differ from his first.

Congratulating his “dear friend,” India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was eager to be “working closely together once again, to benefit both our countries and to shape a better future for the world”.

Trump had a genial relationship with India’s PM during his first presidency between 2017 and 2021, as could be gauged during the Howdy, Modi event in Houston in 2019. India’s PM reciprocated by hosting a rally for Trump called Namaste Trump in Ahmedabad when he visited India the next year.

The Indian Prime Minister was among the first world leaders whose calls Trump received upon being declared the winner of the US presidential election last year.

Because of the frigid weather, Trump’s swearing-in was held indoors instead of outside the Capitol. Monday’s peak temperature was predicted to be -2 degrees Celsius. Former Presidents George W Bush and Bill Clinton, along with their spouses, and Barack Obama, who came alone, were among the attendees at the inauguration ceremony.

A US-based media outlet, capturing the mood aptly, writes: “Over two frigid days in Washington, there was a powerful sense of triumphalism, jubilation and gloating as Mr Trump’s supporters poured into a fortresslike capital for his second inaugural.”

Earlier, Trump’s vice president JD Vance was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in a ceremony involving past presidents and CEOs. Argentine President Javier Milei and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni were among those in attendance, making Trump’s inauguration the first to be attended by foreign leaders. Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai and Mark Zuckerberg and podcast host Joe Rogan were among the other distinguished guests.

Trump had taken the same vehicle as departing President Joe Biden to the inaugural site. It is customary for the departing president to go to the Capitol with the president-elect to witness the swearing-in ceremony. Four years ago, when Trump did not attend Biden’s inauguration and insisted that he was the true winner of the 2020 election, the two did not ride together.

Trump said he would sign pardons for approximately 1,500 people charged with crimes related to the Jan. 6 2021, Capitol riot by his supporters.

He also commuted the sentences of about a dozen defendants in such cases.
