Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Sudarshan Setu’ in Gujarat’s Devbhumi Dwarka district on Sunday. This bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the country, is expected to enhance connectivity and boost tourism in the region.
Constructed over the Arabian Sea, the ‘Sudarshan Setu’ connects Beyt Dwarka island to the mainland Okha in the district. The Prime Minister lauded the project as “stunning” and marked the inauguration as a “special day for Gujarat’s growth trajectory”.
The four-lane cable-stayed bridge is an engineering marvel with a total length of 4.7 kilometers, which includes a 2.32-kilometer bridge and a 2.45-kilometer-long approach road. The central double-span cable-stayed section of the bridge alone stretches for 900 meters. The bridge, which is 27.20 meters wide, also features 2.50-meter-wide footpaths on each side.
Adding a cultural touch, the footpath is adorned with verses from the Srimad Bhagavad Gita and images of Lord Krishna on both sides.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 978 crore, the project was funded by the Union government. Initially called the ‘Signature Bridge’, it has been renamed as ‘Sudarshan Setu’.
The ‘Sudarshan Setu’ is not just an infrastructural marvel but also a boon for devotees. It allows devotees to visit the famous Dwarkadhish temple of Lord Krishna in Beyt Dwarka at all times, a feat that was previously only possible during the day by boat.
