US Initiates Tariff War!

| Updated: February 2, 2025 18:37

United States President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of new tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, citing concerns over illegal immigration and the smuggling of drugs, including fentanyl. The tariffs, which are set to take effect on February 4, include a 25 per cent tariff on most Canadian goods and a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian energy imports. Mexico will face a similar 25 per cent tariff, while China will incur an additional 10 per cent duty on all goods.

Trump confirmed the move in a post on Truth Social, emphasising that the tariffs are being enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

“Today, I have implemented a 25 per cent Tariff on Imports from Mexico and Canada (10 per cent on Canadian Energy), and a 10 per cent additional Tariff on China,” Trump wrote.

“This was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl. We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my Campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favour of it.”

The new tariffs have drawn swift reactions from the mentioned nations. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed dissatisfaction but reassured the public that the country is prepared to handle the consequences.

“Canadians did not want this, but are prepared,” Trudeau posted on X (formerly Twitter). He further stated, “I’ve met with the Premiers and our Cabinet today, and I’ll be speaking with President Sheinbaum of Mexico shortly.”

Trudeau confirmed that Canada would face a 25 per cent tariff on most goods and a 10 per cent tariff on energy. “We did not want this, but Canada is prepared. I’ll be addressing Canadians later this evening,” he added.

In response to the tariffs, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce issued a statement strongly opposing the new measures and signalling its intention to take action through the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

“China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes US tariffs imposed on Chinese goods,” the Ministry said.

The statement continued, “China will take corresponding countermeasures to resolutely safeguard its own rights and interests.”

Chinese officials also criticised the US for its stance on drug control, stating that the additional tariffs would undermine future cooperation on drug control efforts.

The White House statement clarified the rationale behind the tariffs, asserting that the measures were designed to hold the governments of Mexico, Canada, and China accountable for their failure to address illegal immigration and the flow of precursor chemicals used in the production of fentanyl and other drugs.

“Chinese officials have failed to take the actions necessary to stem the flow of precursor chemicals to known criminal cartels and shut down money laundering by transnational criminal organizations,” the White House said.

The White House has further made it clear that these tariffs are not just an economic measure but also a response to national security concerns.
