Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday described the opposition INDIA bloc’s decision to submit a notice seeking the removal of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar as “deeply regrettable” and stated that the government holds him in high regard.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, the minister of parliamentary affairs said the vice president, who also serves as the Rajya Sabha chairperson, is very impartial and professional.
On Tuesday, the INDIA bloc’s parties submitted a notice seeking the Rajya Sabha to expel Dhankhar, claiming that he had engaged in “partisan” conduct while serving as the Upper House’s chair.
In the 243-member House, these parties lack the required number of members to pass a motion, which requires a simple majority if it is presented. However, the opposition said that it was a “strong message to fight for parliamentary democracy.”
Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Naseer Hussain submitted Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody the notice signed by 60 opposition MPs, including members from the Congress, RJD, TMC, CPI, CPI-M, JMM, AAP, DMK and Samajwadi Party.
