Martin Thrills Crowd With Banter And A Song For Bumrah

| Updated: January 27, 2025 13:29

With a dash of humour, pianist and co-founder of the rock band Coldplay, Chris Martin, entertained the Ahmedabad crowd as only he can.

He drew massive cheers from the crowd when he lauded India’s pace ace, Jasprit Bumrah, who was part of the audience at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday.

In a tribute, laced with his trademark wit, Martin said that he didn’t enjoy Bumrah destroying England in cricket. “O Jasprit Bumrah, my beautiful brother. The best bowler in the whole of cricket. We did not enjoy watching you destroy England, wicket after wicket,” Coldplay sang at the concert.

The band displayed Bumrah’s signed Test jersey on the stage. We may recall that earlier, during a show in Mumbai, the band had played a video of Bumrah running through the English batting in their 2024 Test series.

In another instalment of banter, Martin said that his band had received a legal notice from Bumrah’s lawyers for using his name during the concert. Martin read an imaginary letter aloud: “I’m so sorry, but I have to read a letter from Jasprit Bumrah’s lawyer. I have to do this because, otherwise, we could be sent to prison and wouldn’t be able to perform in Ahmedabad.”

In a moving gesture, Martin stopped the concert, midway into his performance after spotting a fan in distress in the crowd. Martin had just started the rendition of his popular number, My Universe.

He rushed to the front of the stage and said: “Hold on, hold on. Hey, are you okay? Can you put her there so she is safe, please? You sit here, because it’s getting squished. Or just sit down there. That’s safer.”

According to media reports, he also offered a heartfelt tribute to India on the occasion of the 76th Republic Day by singing Vande Mataram and Maa Tujhhe Salaam.
