Russia Attacks Maternity Hospital In Mariupol, Ukraine; Zelenskyy Alleges World Of Ignoring Terror

The grim reality of the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been raging since last fortnight, is that the lives of civilians have been squandered in Ukraine. People are leaving the country to save lives, large numbers of people are fleeing to Irpin. People are leaving their country with their families including children and the elderly which can result in a big refugee crisis.

It has been 14 days since Russia began its “military operations” in Ukraine on February 24. In one of the recent developments, the Ukrainian officials have claimed that the Russians have targeted and attacked a children’s hospital and maternity hospital in the city of Mariupol. A statement on the town council’s social media accounts on Wednesday said that the hospital had suffered heavy losses.

Sharing a clip of the attack on Twitter, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy tweeted, “Mariupol. Direct strike of Russian troops at the maternity hospital. People, children are under the wreckage. Atrocity! How much longer will the world be an accomplice ignoring terror? Close the sky right now! Stop the killings! You have power but you seem to be losing humanity.”

Kirilo Tymonsheko, Vice President of Zelensky’s office, said that the authorities were trying to determine the number of people killed or injured. The state department has also shared some videos of the attack on social media.

 Although Governor Pavlo Kirilenko said that “Russia launched an airstrike on a children’s hospital in Mariupol on Wednesday during a scheduled ceasefire, injuring seventeen people including working women.

Risk of radiation at the Chernobyl nuclear plant

The Chernobyl nuclear plant’s connection was cut off from Ukraine’s power grid by Russian forces on Wednesday. Ukraine says reserve diesel generators can supply electricity to the plant for only 48 hours. After which there will be no electricity for the cooling system of the plant and radiation begin. The plant operator said that due to non-repair, there is a danger of radiation leakage all over the country. Ukraine has demanded a ceasefire to repair the plant.

Meanwhile, the refugee crisis in the neighbouring country has escalated. According to the UN, as of now, two million people have left Ukraine. On the other hand, people are having difficulty moving to Britain.

Ukraine claims to have killed 12,000 Russian soldiers

Ukraine has claimed that around 12,000 Russians have been killed so far in the war with Russia. Ukraine has destroyed 49 Russian aircraft, 81 helicopters, 317 tanks and 1,070 different types of armoured vehicles so far in the war, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine tweeted.

Russia says talks with Kyiv are moving forward

Earlier, Russia on Wednesday said that it was in talks with Kyiv to have a resolution on the Ukraine conflict, insisting that Moscow is not doing anything to oust the Ukrainian government.

“There has been some progress,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marija Jakharova said, while addressing the reporters. Ukrainian and Russian officials have met on the Belarus-Poland border with an aim to resolve the conflict.

Zelensky addressed the British Parliament

Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Zelensky delivered a historic speech in the House of Commons, via video conferencing. He called on British lawmakers to declare Russia a “terrorist state” and to impose strict sanctions on Moscow to ensure that our country remains safe.
