Hundreds of people rushed to Lulu mall’s midnight sale in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi attracted by its special 50% discount. A huge chunk of the population was seen waiting in lines at midnight to shop for their desired items. The initial phase went smoothly as musical performances and entertaining activities took place to entice the interest of the customers, but turbulence unveiled itself soon after.
Videos posted online showed shoppers pushing each other in a rush near the mall’s escalators. Security was hopelessly trying to control the crowd while the crowd seemed equally adamant to maintain the line to shop the goods at the hugely discounted rates. The videos of the rush have gone viral on the internet.
Talking to regional director of the Lulu group, Joy Sadanandan; he shared that their primary goal was to introduce midnight shopping as means to shop more comfortably and with leisure, as there was less traffic at night.
Sadanandan said that the company aims to first introduce this practice as a trial to observe the issues that it comes attached with. After that, the company shall implement a strategy that studies all the aspects and delivers the best results to the company, and shoppers both.
